While Lynn Whitesell was working as the global head of talent management with Pharmaceutical Product Development, one of her direct reports taught her the true value in diverse leadership styles. “She made me a more conscious leader—heightened my awareness and appreciation of differences and motivated me to look at differences in others for leverage and business advantages,” Whitesell recalls.
The employee, a director and veteran of the company, had a style of interaction that differed from Whitesell’s. Whitesell describes herself as commanding, pioneering and energizing, while her direct report was deliberate, humble and resolute. When the two collaborated, the experiences and skills each brought to the table resulted in greater business outcomes. “Our differences helped both of us reach optimum results for the team while maximizing leadership skills for both of us. She stepped up and so did I,” Whitesell says.
