It used to be that 360 degree assessment was performed when leaders were struggling. Status Quo – Not anymore! 360 Assessments are now performed to help employees become more effective!
360 degree assessments are a great way to collect data and information about that helps leaders understand their strengths and weaknesses, and contribute purposeful insights into aspects of their work that will support making them more successful! The process typically allows the leader to select a number of raters who provide the feedback through the survey. Through a confidential process, the data is sourced to create formal development plans. The skills and behaviors collected create measurable value, growth and opportunity for the leader and the organization.
The goal of a 360-degree assessment is specifically individual development. The feedback is utilized for input into an employees talent management strategies that focus on leadership and professional development.
360 degree assessment feedback is hard to deny! Its effectiveness is due to the fact that leadership is relationship intensive, and as organization’s change, feedback becomes more important. Ironically, leaders do not naturally get this kind of feedback. Thus, why 360 degree assessments are purposeful: they provide answers to the question – How am I doing? They can also be used as a guide for continuous improvement while helping leaders check the validity of their self-perceptions and ensures that leaders view themselves realistically.
It is important to keep in mind with a 360 degree assessment that unanimous agreements seldom occur. Understanding that it is common for people to be perceived differently by different rater groups for the follow reasons:
- Participant behavior varies with different people
- Amount of exposure varies with different people
- People’s expectations and perceptions differ
- Two people can interpret the same behavior very differently
So…Why should leaders use a 360 degree Assessment? Here are three reasons:
- To increase self-awareness – “ the higher up in an organization, the less direct, honest feedback one receives.” (Kaplan) 2. To continue to develop as a leader – “…even the most successful leaders can increase their effectiveness by changing specific elements of their behavior.” (Goldsmith) 3. To prevent derailment – 360 degree assessment, combined with ongoing executive coaching, can prevent career derailment. (Lombardo & McCauley)
Today, successful organizations are utilizing the 360 degree assessments to provide a stimulus for change and help leaders become more effective. Leaders are reaping the benefits of enabling self-awareness (the cornerstone of development), having quality support and encouragement for learning and growth, and establishing a foundation that creates a springboard for individual development plans.
